At the time it was built, it was the largest skate park in Australia. The redevelopment has positioned Belconnen as one of Australia’s ‘State of the Art’ skate parks with contemporary, diverse facilities. The redevelopment ensures Canberra’s skateboarders can sit amongst the world’s best. It ensures that world champion skateboarders continue to include Canberra in their Australian travel itinerary. The skate park, which was detail designed and constructed in less than a year, is to an international skating and bmx standard with a focus on street skating to reflect demand and to offer a different, but complimentary experience to other skate parks in Canberra.
The main aim of the design was to think about this skate park in a new way. How could this park be unique to Australia. This resulted in non traditional ramps or rectangular ‘grey’ concrete forms. Extensive consultation and background investigation was done in collaboration with the Canberra Skateboard Association and other major stakeholders including business owners, local schools, youth centres and the Canberra University. Consultation found that the preference was for street plaza style obstacles. The quality of design and use of robust, low maintenance, non-painted surfaces represents a quality asset for the ACT Government that has lasted for many years - Still one of Australia’s most loved parks.
